A Break

I had to take this week off, to work on a poster for her fashion show.
So this week I was completely envolved in doing revisions and such.

But I thought I would post it up.
Its different from what I normally work. But I may try to use similar style for down the road. Something I would like to experiment for this project.

Ok, just some more reference. Mont St. Michel, off the coast of Normandy. Often mentioned in Architecture school and no doubt the inspiration for many a fantasy author. When the tide is out it sits out there in the tidal flats surrounded by nothing for miles. At the bottom is Fort Broyard, a prison.

Small update and ref images

Slowly but surely. You guys may be interested in the reference images I found. They are of Hakka dwellings and perhaps the most interesting architectural typology to ever come out of China. I'm sure some of you know the Hakka as a nomadic Han peoples that have settled in modern day Fujian and Guangdong. Originally from the north these people started building these type of communal dwellings over a thousand years ago though most surviving examples are recent Ming dynasty. Of course they were originally built for defensive purposes but today they are regarded as architectural wonders.

Not much of an update, getting back into illustrative mode. It still looks a mess, but it's starting to look like something. As I render it helps me to visualize new ideas. I have some cosutme ideas I'll get down for tomorrow.

sketchers

15 minutes of sketching during commercials in between 'The Boys from Brazil'. Was expanding an idea on stilted fishing villages on an inland sea which expanded to small man made islands with keys and wharfs expanding out from them.

Further thoughts on a steampunk world. I was thinking about the bean stalk in terms of the more abstract notion of cyberspace. I'm thinking of a very primitive form of internet accessible on these crude typewriter style computers (See Terry Guillian's Brazil).

Vince's image of the paper talismans reminded me of a story I read recently. It comes from the memoirs of an American in Peking just after the turn of the century (1900s). After reading it I thought this is great material for a fairy tale and I'd like to work something like this into my vision. It concerns the Tai Ping Rebellion for those interested.

-----

"I remember just after going to China, sitting one
evening on a kang, or brick bed, with Yin-ma, an old nurse, our
only light being a wick floating in a dish of oil. Yin-ma was
about the age of the Empress Dowager, but, unlike Her Majesty,
her locks were snow-white. When I entered the dimly lighted room
she was sitting in the midst of a group of women and
girls--patients in the hospital--who listened with bated breath
as she told them of the horrors of the Tai-ping rebellion.

" 'Why!' said the old nurse, 'all that the rebels had to do on
their way to Peking, was to cut out as many paper soldiers as
they wanted, put them in boxes, and breathe upon them when they
met the imperial troops, and they were transformed into such
fierce warriors that no one was able to withstand them. Then when
the battle was over and they had come off victors they only
needed to breathe upon them again, when they were changed into
paper images and packed in their boxes, requiring neither food
nor clothing. Indeed the spirits of the rebels were everywhere,
and no matter who cut out paper troops they could change them
into real soldiers.'

" 'But, Yin-ma, you do not believe those superstitions, do you?'

" 'These are not superstitions, doctor, these are facts, which
everybody believed in those days, and it was not safe for a woman
to be seen with scissors and paper, lest her neighbours report
that she was cutting out troops for the rebels. The country was
filled with all kinds of rumours, and every one had to be very
careful of all their conduct, and of everything they said, lest
they be arrested for sympathizing with the enemy.'

" 'But, Yin-ma, did you ever see any of these paper images
transformed into soldiers?'

" 'No, I never did myself, but there was an old woman lived near
our place, who was said to be in sympathy with the rebels. One
night my father saw soldiers going into her house and when he had
followed them he could find nothing but paper images. You may not
have anything of this kind happen in America, but very many
people saw them in those terrible days of pillage and bloodshed
here.' "

been a while

sorry.. been a lazy ass and not scanning.

First pic is more scribbles and ideas. I'm thinking there was a effort to gather a army sent to climb the demon stalk.. but they were attacked before they even made it to the top (or maybe bottom???).
I did one enviro study as well.

One of the guys has calligraphy tattooed onto him (instead of paper talismans)

And now for something slightly different I thought I'd try messing around with a different style
with the similar toppic.

progress

Last night I actually picked up a roller pen and some scrap printer paper and started scribbling in bed. Right now trying simply to find some kind of formalized vocabulary for a steampunk environment. I found out that the anime/manga, 'Spirit of Wonder' is a steampunk story with a chinese bent to it. Will have to look into it.

Quick location

A quick sketch on where Jacqueline... erm, I mean Jack might live. A teas shop by the city wall. That dark mass on the right is the city wall. If you can actually read what is going on in the image, the first floor could be a noodle shop and the upper floor a tea house. I'd like to make it a little more run down and deconstruct it a little more maybe add a few more steampunk futurisms. I added those giant awning posts at the last minute. Not sure what they're for yet? Need to think a little more outside the box. Ok kick it suckaz.

Another Doodle

This maybe my "Jack". Chinese opera style clothing and another mask, plus Talismans. The Talismans are protection for minor demons, and the demon stalk (the mask is also partly to help with protection from demons). If "Jack" were to climb the Demon Stalk she will need these Tallisman. The Demon stalk is a gate way for the demons to safely cross over. Still working on the demon stalk design though. Made out of tenticles and corpses.

I'm envisioning the land is now terrorized with demons. I'm trying to go for some kind of mythological type feel.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Additional notes. I'm still kind of loose on the storyline.
Current problems I'm wondering about the storyline. Area all demons sentient? Are they beasts. Do demons and ghost coexist? Are all demons live in the physical world.. or another plane.

Do all demons where masks? Why do they where masks (do they where masks to be more human. Do they need the mask to live in our wolrd? Why do they want to be in our world).

Sorry about this rant guys.. Just trying to work things out as terms of story and drawing. I'm still working out the balance of things.

Is Jaqualine wearing the mask to hide her presence?

demon

This is rough for my "giant" Kind of going with the Oni motif. I'm thinking this Oni could be sort of between a cross of Mystical Armour/Mecha?? It's kind of like Iron Cast. Chained to pillars and the treasure chest. To guard the treasure.

Had writers block last night so I just started randomly doodling and I ended up drawing my usual crap.

This is also to encourage others to post their crap. Nothing ever has to be finished. Sometimes process stuff is the most interesting.

Hi All.
Like I promised, I have created a blog space, that will be like a online group sketch/scrap book.
For now, post references, sketches, your art works... whatever that is all good.
