Further thoughts on a steampunk world. I was thinking about the bean stalk in terms of the more abstract notion of cyberspace. I'm thinking of a very primitive form of internet accessible on these crude typewriter style computers (See Terry Guillian's Brazil).

A very interesting idea.
But not sure if you're open to this. But I think a Hot Springs might work better for the city. Ithink it would tie everything better for city Planning.

If the city had a few hot springs. It would make sence for people to have places for communal cleaning and water And Power. To use the resoucrces and share them. Because you can't move a hot Spring. And this would explain why the city isn't more advanced. I would think if people had wind turbines, a city would be able to creat the infastructure for a sewer sytem and water system would(pipes) would be created. But if you had The hot springs to generate the power. Its almost using hitech and lowtech. Steam and all also guisers(is that spelt properly) could generate all the power. Plus creating a water system so to speak.

Just my suggestion.

It doesn't really matter where the electricity comes from, I use the giant wind turbines simply as a visual design cue. Most urban dwellers of the ancient world, chinese, romans etc. had proper sewage but clean running water was never a reality as far as i know. I would say wind tech is a fairly primitive tech also. I guess what I'm saying is that in any alternate world any form of mixing primitivism and tech can be justified. They need not be developing in a linear fashion or in the progressive manner in which we are historically familiar with. I was thinking such tech as electricity, or science for that matter is just another form of practical sourcery. The geysers/hotspring is certainly interesting though.

ohit was just a suggestion.

But the only part I was mostly questioning. Was why the public communal fountain for cooking and washing. You're right that it has strong visual ques. And does ground things from the past.
My only thing that I was saying. Because they have electricity. why doesn't the town have plumbing.

I wasn't saying they were bad ideas. Just thinks to think through.

I just ask questions.. only because you may get some interesting things by solving it.
Digging is prohibited... because of creatures in the ground. Is the water that is collect treated as .. holly water (and not permited to be put into plumbing.. because its seen as dirty?) etc etc... Just thinks to think about.
